Cannabis and Osteoporosis

Cannabis and Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a common condition characterized by decreases in bone mass and microscopic changes in bone architecture. Bone fractures, especially of the hip and vertebra, are the most common complications of osteoporosis, often leading to disability and increased mortality. An understanding of endocannabinoid system regulation of the skeleton may help patients support endocannabinoid tone in maintaining healthy bones. Lifestyle choices have significant impact on adult bone mass and the risk of osteoporosis later in life.

The endocannabinoid system regulates bone development, growth, and physiology, and is involved in skeletal diseases, such as osteoporosis. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19634029)

The endocannabinoid system includes CB2 receptors that encourage the mineralization process that supports strong bones and slows the creating of new osteoclast cells that control how bone is weakened through the restoration process. This has been demonstrated in early pre-clinical work on mouse cells, where beta-caryophyllene stimulated bone marrow cells to differentiate into osteoblasts that support bone remodeling.

The common terpene found in cannabis, known as Beta-Caryophyllene, targets CB2 receptors involved in maintaining healthy bones. In a mouse study, Beta-Caryophyllene enhanced osteoblast mineralization and suppressed osteoclast formation in mouse cell cultures.

Beta-caryophyllene is a potent CB2 agonist. For oral administration, enteric coating is required for absorption through the intestine. 25-50 mg per day of beta-caryophyllene in an enteric oral formulation is recommended. You may be able to find a cannabis medicine that offers a high amount of this terpene.
Always talk to a trusted medical professional who understands cannabis, the endocannabinoid system, and your condition, to help guide you on the appropriate medicine.
